Why is endoscopy performed?
Endoscopic procedures are used to detect and identify problems in the esophagus, stomach, intestines, and rectum, even if no symptoms are present. However, they are also used to detect colon cancer, which can only be identified through endoscopy.

Endoscopy helps the treating physician detect:
– Specific causes and symptoms.
– Screening individuals over a certain age, such as those older than 45, for colon cancer.
– Treating stomach problems using small tools for treatment.
– Stopping bleeding with lasers.
– Taking a biopsy for testing.

Preparations for lower endoscopy:
A special diet prescribed by the treating physician must be followed, with a focus on liquids and avoiding milk and carbonated drinks. However, eating should be stopped by midnight on the night before the endoscopy. Your doctor may recommend taking a laxative, and in some cases, enemas may be used. It’s important to consult with the specialist doctor if you are taking medication for conditions such as diabetes, blood pressure, heart disease, or dietary supplements containing iron.

During lower endoscopy:
The patient lies on their side with their knees pulled towards their chest. The surgeon then administers a sedative or pain reliever to the patient and inserts an endoscope equipped with a light and a tube that allow the doctor to pump air, which helps inflate the colon and provides a better view of the inside of the colon for detection. During the passage of the endoscope, you may feel cramping or an urge to defecate.

The endoscope has a small camera that reveals the inside of the colon to show if there is any disease.

After lower endoscopy:
You may feel bloated or experience gas expulsion, as air is cleared from the colon. However, walking will help you get rid of this feeling.

You may also notice blood in the first bowel movement after the endoscopy, which is not a cause for concern. However, if the bleeding is excessive and other symptoms appear, it is important to consult a surgeon.
